Do I Need an In-The-Ear or a Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aid?

Updated on

For most people, hearing ability declines over time. If you are affected as well and have decided to support your hearing, you'll face the choice between an in-the-ear and a behind-the-ear hearing aid. Both types come with advantages and disadvantages. Which one is ultimately right depends not only on personal preference but also on the functions required by the wearer.

In-The-Ear (ITE) Hearing Aids

For mild to moderate hearing loss, in-the-ear hearing aids – also called ITE devices – are a good fit. They are discreet and barely visible to bystanders. They are popular during sports thanks to their high wearing comfort and are also favored by glasses wearers since they don't interfere with the temples of the glasses. They allow spatial hearing because, due to their design, they preserve the natural properties of the auricle and therefore provide a natural sound.

If you are prone to middle ear infections, however, in-the-ear devices are less suitable. They promote the production of earwax since the ear is less ventilated, and they must therefore be cleaned more frequently. Higher costs are also a downside, as is the fact that the anatomy of the ear determines whether an in-the-ear device is suitable for you. If you have a small ear canal, it can be difficult to wear the device firmly and securely.

Behind-The-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids

If you suffer from moderate to severe hearing loss, a behind-the-ear hearing aid – BTE for short – is a good fit. Of course, behind-the-ear devices can also be used for mild hearing loss. BTE devices offer more room for technology and therefore enable better hearing as well as longer battery life. Care and cleaning effort is lower than with an in-the-ear device, and ventilation of the inner ear is not impaired. The anatomy of your ear plays no role in the use of a BTE device.

Behind-the-ear hearing aids are less popular among glasses wearers, since the temples of the glasses can make the device sit slightly less comfortably. People who place high value on aesthetics may also be less enthusiastic about this type of hearing aid, as they are more visible than the discreet in-the-ear device.
